Coordinating conjunctions

A coordinating conjunction connects two independent clauses. Both clauses use the word order they would have as independent sentences.

The coordinating conjunctions in German are:

aber - but, nevertheless
denn - for, because
oder - or
sondern - but rather
und - and

Sie geht in die Bibliothek, aber sie bleibt nicht lange.
Arbeiten Sie heute abend, oder gehen Sie ins Kino?
Ich gehe nicht ins Kino, sondern ich bleibe zu Hause.
She goes to the library, but she doesn't stay long.
Are you working this evening, or going to the movies?
I'm not going to the movies, but rather staying at home.
